Wonder if this has anything to do with yesterdays supposed Xbox 360 Slim running backups. This Sony Playstation 3 so called "mod chip" & USB solution suddenly has appeared seemingly out of thin air. Apprantly theres allready sites selling this thing springing up. It claims it works with all regions & models, doe's not void the warrenty, backs up games to hard drive and they run apprantly 2x as fast as off the blu ray drive. If it is just a simple USB key we can assume its a software based exploit of some sort.

Videos purporting to show a working PS3 hack have surfaced, though their veracity is currently the subject of heated debate.

Just whether the device works or is actually a scam is not yet clear – all the purported evidence comes from a small group of pirates, nobody seems to have heard of the device prior to its sudden unveiling, and apparently scam sites pretending to sell the device have already sprung up.

Now some of the dust has settled down, we now know its not just a plain old USB key (so we been told) but some kind of key that Sony hands out to developers that has some code on it that triggers a kind of debug mode in the Playstation 3 allowing certain restrictions to be dropped (region encoding,signed code checks etc) and thus allowing homebrew,backups,unsigned code,game dumping etc. to go on. Since this thing is also using some of that fellow GeoHots code/hack/mod apparently its detectable by Sony, much like Microsoft and there Xbox 360 detection practices.

It is only useful to play pirated PS3 games but there's a hitch, because they used Geohots modified code and not the official Sony code they can detect if your machine is running from the hack or not and disable your machine,much like MS did with the 360.


Things might improve in the future and future developments open up the machine better but for now it's mainly PS3 back ups.
