Nintendo 3DS Scratched screen problem and lid hinge fix

Nintendo 3DS screen design flaw

Permalink 05:49:51 pm by drf, Categories: News , Tags: 3ds, damage, fix, hinge, kit, lid, nintendo, screen

Apparent issue with the new Nintendo 3DS that results in poor closure of lid and damage to the screen. Apparentfix either buy a screen protector or buy one or fit some small rubber feet from a Xbox or something. This would be a pretty big design flaw on Nintendos part, but then again the DS series screens are not known for handling knocks and bumps with ease.

As can be seen in this Nintendo mock up grabbed from somewhere the issue seems not to exsist.. but read on...

3dbrainsgreat idea, love it. Shame you have to do
this though as nintendo should have released a working unit rather than a self destroying
one.

Just took mine back for a refund, wish I had
seen this before I got any scratches.

drfDoes a seem a bit odd considering Nintendo is usually the best of the bunch for decent quality control and customer service.

In the past Nintendo has given vouchers, done recalls at there cost etc. but not much word on this, I guess times are hard.

HunteronXI also tried doing this myself, as I realised that the analogue stick and touch screen border were taller than the bumpers.

Thanks for posting this here. We need to get as many people to see this as possible.

magalii think this is stupid you peaple are just trying to ruin the nintendo name haven't you guys herd of a nintendo 3ds case well if you haven't look it up. thats what the cases are made for to protect ur 3ds from any harm duhh even my lil cousin knows that and he's five. seriously think before you try to prove a point . and dont post a comment like we were talking about the screens not the 3ds its self well duhh then buy screen protecters and if you can't afford those then don't buy a 3ds.but just remember your the one whos missing out on all the cool new features and games that are only for the 3ds (i highly recomend buying a rubber case for the 3ds. oh and sorry if i seem rude but it just bugs me when people find stupid little reasons to complain about simple easy to fix problems)

drf@Magali

LoL, fanboi much?

Trying to ruin the Nintendo name? The fact I still have my NES & SNES shows the name has a quality.
Why should we buy a case if theres a issue theres a issue.

"(i highly recomend buying a rubber case for the 3ds. oh and sorry if i seem rude but it just bugs me when people find stupid little reasons to complain about simple easy to fix problems)"

So you admit theres a problem and we need to either buy a case or find a fix?
I'm not sure how buying a case will help the screen out...

Josh@magali

No one's trying to ruin the Nintendo name, but if a console scratches ITSELF, that is a huge problem and should not even be present. Nintendo really screwed up here.

drfThanks for the follow up the argument here seems to be a design flaw on Nintendos part and people keep saying buy this or that to fix it, the problem is people have just been out and paid good money for a product, they should not have to mess about with it to get it do something. Makes them get a tad mad about it.

We are not trying to ruin Nintendos name, build quality of Nintendo items is usually very high unlike some other companies. We seem to live in a time where a product needs to be returned due to a fault and people accept this as normal now, theres no way that would have gone on in the 90s. For example I have had Epson printer exchanged 5 times and each unit starts breaking down that says something. Look at the Xbox 360 I know people on there 3/4/5th unit. Its like crappy build quality is accepted as part of the product and it should not be. What makes this situation worse is companys who will try and palm you off or stores and you get passed back and forth and no answer while your stuck with it.

You came across as a bit of fanboy for the way you defended Nintendo name, but its ok I mean I've seen worse and we all entitled to a say.

My NES & SNES are still going well, the SNES is being abused by a 5yr old now as it is passed down yet again in the family, they sure dont make things like that no more ;(

PS: The phone number on the back of the SNES for the Nintendo services still works again showing a commitment there and ive never had to phone it :)

magalithe thing about the quality of companys today is true and also the stuff at the end of your comment is true i also still have my snes and nes and also my n64 they don't make the new consoles as good as the old ones now a days its all about the money u know the millions they make for selling low quality products yea i was born 1994 so the n64 was kind of my favorite old console it still is even though i'm 17 now but yea about the 3ds i'm just gonna keep mine until they make a modified or new version of it hopefully no problems there lol :)

Texmex72Ok so it is a flaw no doubt, seems Apple had a flaw too the responded by sending out cases to everyone who bought a iPhone. There was also the problem with the Wii straps breaking Nintendo sent stronger starps to everyone. I'm sure if enough people ask they will do somethign about this too.
BTW a case will not stop you from getting the scratches on the screen, i put a screen protector but now the scratches are on that and it's distracting.

DarkslayerThank you very much for this. I heard about the issue on another gaming website and lo and behold my 3DS has smudges exactly where the touch screen is. I've put my cleaning cloth for my glasses between the two screens at the moment but I'm definately going to need to look into getting something better so I'll give that idea a shot.

BTW. I've only had my 3DS since Saturday. It is now Wednesday and it isn't as though I've been opening/closing it excessively.

sebassagai think this is a great idea good work.. but what would be the most effective glue to paste those things?...
23/06/11 @ 19:01
Comment from: drf [Member] Email
drfI would have thought a tiny drop of Super Glue would be best, but not so great if you need to remove them in the future for whatever reason. Double sided tape cut down very small may work well.

HeathI posted in the above mentioned Nintendo Forum. Read what I wrote there. You want to hear it, trust me.

In a nutshell, Nintendo is covering this defect under warranty. They are doing it quickly, and will provide you a shipping Label so the shipping is on them.

If you have upper screen issues due to normal wear and tear, and your bottom screen is smudging/scratching the top one, read my post, call Nintendo and get it taken care of by an authorized Nintendo Repair Center. Don't try to fix it yourself.

drfExcellent news on the warrenty :)
Nintendo are usually pretty good with fixing things without too much hassle, customer service at least survives in some places.
